Overview

Music Lane Festival Okinawa 2027 / Trans Asia Music Meeting 2027 is Japan’s premier international showcase festival, returning to Koza, Okinawa City for its most ambitious edition to date. Created to connect artists from Japan and overseas with music industry professionals primarily from cities across Asia, the festival is far more than a concert series — it is a hybrid of live showcases, conference, networking, and creative collaboration.

The event takes place as a circuit-type city festival centered around Music Town Oto-Ichiba, with approximately 60 artists performing showcase live sets simultaneously across multiple venues throughout Koza. Unlike large-scale arena festivals, Music Lane focuses on discovery. Artists are selected primarily through an open call, along with a limited number of invited acts, ensuring a lineup of emerging and mid-career talents who are on the verge of breaking internationally.

In parallel, Trans Asia Music Meeting (TAMM) serves as the conference and networking program. Launched in Okinawa in 2016 with the goal of building music networks across Asia, TAMM brings together festival directors, booking agents, label owners, publishers, and media from across the region. The Program Director is Tetsuichi Yamaguchi, CEO of Studio ENTRE Inc.

Enjoy Your Event Stress-Free with Japan Travelo

Do you know? Planning events, festivals, concerts, and cultural experiences in Japan can be overwhelming. Japan Travelo brings everything together in one place, helping you manage your itinerary, transport, and accommodation with ease—so you can enjoy Japan without the stress of planning.

The 2027 edition also continues innovative programs such as the songwriting camp, where foreign artists collaborate with Japanese creators to produce music for the Japanese market, with works released under the Music Lane label. With support from TuneCore Japan and partners across the Asian music industry, this is where the next wave of Asian music is discovered.

What Makes This Event Special

Artist First Showcase Philosophy: Unlike commercial festivals that prioritize ticket sales, Music Lane Festival is built on an artist-first approach. The majority of performers are chosen through an open call judged by industry professionals, not by commercial popularity alone. This creates a genuine discovery environment where a Filipino indie band, a Taiwanese electronic artist, and an Okinawan folk-rock group share equal billing.

Circuit Festival Format in Koza: Koza, the nickname for Okinawa City, is the historic heart of Okinawa’s live music culture. Known as Music Town, its streets are filled with live houses. The festival uses Music Town Oto-Ichiba as its central hub and expands into nearby live houses such as Remy’s, creating a walkable circuit where fans can hop between venues and discover new sounds every 30 minutes.

Trans Asia Music Meeting Conference: This is not just about watching shows. Business Pass holders gain access to conferences, speed meeting sessions, keynote talks, and networking parties including Opening Party and Closing Party. It is one of the few places in Japan where an independent artist from Mongolia can directly meet a festival booker from Norway or France.

Truly International Lineup: The festival’s second lineup announcement confirmed artists from countries such as Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Mongolia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Nigeria, France, Italy, Belgium, and Norway, plus the Philippines. Past Filipino participants include Novocrane, ONE CLICK STRAIGHT, The Sundown, Barbie Almalbis, and Vincent Eco, illustrating its pan-Asian to global reach.

Songwriting Camp and Industry Bridge: In 2025 the festival added a songwriting camp where foreign artists collaborate with Japanese creators to produce music specifically for the Japanese market. This practical industry bridge helps overseas artists break into Japan with professionally released tracks, not just one-off showcase exposure.

Lineup / Featured Artists

The lineup for Music Lane Festival Okinawa is curated through an open call that begins in summer and finalizes in multiple waves. Approximately 60 artists are expected for the 2027 edition.

2027 Second Lineup Announcement: Filipino band Novocrane was announced as part of the second lineup. Novocrane’s appearance follows their performance at Axean Festival in Bali, Indonesia, alongside fellow Filipino acts ALYSON, PLAYERTWO, and GEE EXCLSV. They join the global roster representing over a dozen countries.

Previous Editions Provide Context: The 2025 first lineup included 23 artists such as AIMI, ulma sound junction, Unmark Rabbit, nodomn, Sharumaikenakane from Okinawa, Delicious Grapefruits Moon, GOOD BYE APRIL, Johnnivan, and Kingo from mainland Japan, plus international acts. The third wave added HOME, Sarasa, HALLEY, and Shallow Levée, among others.

2023 and 2024 Heritage: The 2023 lineup featured acts like Aragaki Mutsumi Project, HARAHELLS, Common People Like You from Thailand, Owl Gall, Adora from Japan/Thailand, and Kengorians from Okinawa. Early editions featured legendary Japanese acts like Shonen Knife and Sunny Day Service, plus hybrid pre-recorded sets from international artists including KRNA, She’s Only Sixteen, and syd hartha from the Philippines.

What to Expect in 2027: Attendees can expect a mix of:

Okinawan Artists: Rock, folk, and electronic acts rooted in Okinawa’s unique champuru culture, blending traditional sanshin sounds with modern indie.

Mainland Japanese Indie: Emerging J-rock, city pop, shoegaze, and hip-hop artists who are gaining traction on TuneCore Japan.

Asian and Global Delegates: Curated acts from Korea’s indie scene, Taiwan’s vibrant alternative pop, Singapore’s electronic producers, Southeast Asian bands, and European showcase artists brought via partner festivals like Playtime Festival in Mongolia.

All artists perform 30 to 40 minute showcase sets, perfect for industry scouting and fan discovery.

Event Experience

Music Lane Festival Okinawa feels more like SXSW or Tallinn Music Week than a traditional Japanese rock festival.

Your base is Music Town Oto-Ichiba, a multi-floor complex in the heart of Koza Music Town. The third floor hall is the main showcase hall with professional sound and lighting, while the first floor Music Plaza serves as a free entry area and meeting point. From there, you walk to surrounding live houses, each with its own character — from tiny 80-capacity bars to 300-capacity clubs.

During the day, Trans Asia Music Meeting takes over Lagoon Koza and other conference spaces. Business Pass holders attend panels on topics like music export strategies, festival booking in Asia, sync licensing for Japanese media, and how to tour Southeast Asia sustainably. Speed Meeting sessions allow artists to pitch directly to delegates for five minutes each.

In the evening, the circuit comes alive. Wristbands are exchanged at Music Town Oto-Ichiba and allow entry to all venues subject to capacity. If a venue is full, staff manage queues fairly. You can catch three to four acts per hour by walking between venues that are only two to three minutes apart.

Networking is built into the experience. Opening Party and Closing Party are not just parties — they are where collaborations begin. Past songwriting camp participants have released tracks together months after meeting at the festival.

The atmosphere is intimate, professional, and deeply musical. It is common to see a Norwegian festival director chatting with an Okinawan sanshin player over Orion beer after a set.

Event History

Music Lane Festival Okinawa was launched as a spin-off of Trans Asia Music Meeting, which started in Okinawa in 2016 to build music networks across Asia.

The debut edition was originally slated for mid-January and was announced as a multinational music showcase festival featuring a hybrid format combining live performances from Japanese artists and pre-recorded live sets from international artists from other parts of Asia. Due to rising COVID cases, it was rescheduled to February 20-21, 2021, with live performances at Sakurazaka Theater in Naha City and Music Town Oto-Ichiba and 7th Heaven Koza in Okinawa City.

Early lineups featured legendary Japanese acts like Shonen Knife, Sunny Day Service, eastern youth, Miyuki Hatakeyama, Hasiken, VERONICA VERONICO, TOSH, Takako Tate, CINEMA dub MONKS, and RIKUO. International participants were curated from Philippines, Thailand, Mongolia, and beyond.

From 2022 onward, the festival established its circuit format and open call system. The 2023 edition was held at Music Town Otoichiba complex including Market, Music Square, Remy’s Building, and other spaces, featuring artists from Okinawa, Japan, Thailand, and more.

By 2025, the festival had grown to over 60 artists per edition and added the songwriting camp program. It became recognized by international bodies, with its director Ryuji Noda listed among global festival leaders alongside representatives from Fuji Rock, Java Jazz Festival, and other major events.

The 2027 edition continues this growth, with its official announcement emphasizing expansion of conferences, networking, and digital content while maintaining the traditional artist-first circuit showcase style.

Tips Before You Go

Exchange Wristband Early: All tickets must be exchanged for wristbands at Music Town Oto-Ichiba before entering other venues. Lines are longest just before evening showcases start. Exchange in afternoon to avoid missing first acts.

Plan Your Circuit Strategically: With 60 artists across multiple venues simultaneously, it is impossible to see everyone. Check the timetable released a few weeks before festival and prioritize must-see acts. Leave buffer time for venue entry queues, especially for popular international acts.

Business Pass Networking Preparation: If attending as industry, bring business cards, press kits, and music links ready to share via QR code. Speed Meeting slots are limited and sign-ups open early. Research delegate list in advance via festival app.

Light Packing and Comfortable Shoes: Venues are close but you will be standing and walking for hours. Wear comfortable shoes suitable for small live houses with concrete floors. Small shoulder bag is better than large backpack as venues are crowded.

Support Artists Directly: Many artists sell CDs, vinyl, and merchandise directly at venues. Bring cash in Japanese yen as many small live houses do not accept cards. Buying directly supports touring artists, especially international acts who traveled far.

Attendee Experiences

Attendees describe Music Lane Festival Okinawa as Japan’s most genuine showcase festival, often comparing it to SXSW’s early years or Korea’s Zandari Festa.

International artists who have participated highlight the warm welcome from Okinawan audiences and the high level of professional exchange. Filipino bands ONE CLICK STRAIGHT and The Sundown noted that performing in Koza gave them direct connections to Japanese labels and festival bookers they would not have met elsewhere.

Domestic fans appreciate the intimate venue sizes. Unlike large festivals where you watch from far away, here you can stand two meters from an artist from Norway or Mongolia and talk to them after the set at the merch table. Many fans discover their new favorite bands from countries they had never listened to before.

Business Pass holders praise the accessibility of delegates. Unlike larger conferences where networking feels hierarchical, Music Lane’s small scale means a young manager from Thailand can easily have a 20-minute conversation with a European festival director over coffee at Lagoon Koza.

Local Okinawan attendees value how the festival revitalizes Koza’s music town identity, bringing new life and international attention to a city that has been the soul of Okinawan rock since the 1970s. The mix of local elders who have run live houses for 40 years and young international artists creates a unique intergenerational music community.

FAQ

What is the difference between Music Lane Festival Okinawa and Trans Asia Music Meeting?

Music Lane Festival Okinawa is the live showcase festival open to general public and industry, featuring approximately 60 artists performing across multiple venues in Koza. Trans Asia Music Meeting is the conference and networking program held as part of the festival, primarily intended for showcase artists and Business Pass holders. TAMM includes panels, speed meetings, and networking parties. A standard ticket gives you access to live showcases, while Business Pass gives you access to both showcases and TAMM conference programs.

Do I need a Business Pass or is a standard ticket enough?

A standard ticket is sufficient if your goal is to watch live music and discover new artists across the circuit venues. It allows entry to all showcase venues after wristband exchange. A Business Pass is designed for music industry professionals, artists seeking business connections, and delegates who want to attend conferences, speed meetings, songwriting camp, and exclusive networking parties. If you are an artist, manager, label owner, or festival professional looking to build Asian networks, Business Pass offers significantly more value.

How does the wristband and venue entry system work?

All tickets must first be exchanged for wristbands at Music Town Oto-Ichiba, which serves as the central hub and info center. After exchange, you can enter any circuit venue by showing your wristband, subject to capacity limits. If a venue is full, staff will restrict entry and operate a one-out, one-in queue. Wristbands are date-specific, so a 2-day or 3-day pass requires exchanging for separate wristbands each day. Keep your wristband visible and intact, as lost wristbands cannot be reissued without proof of purchase.

Can international visitors attend and is English supported?

Yes, international visitors are warmly welcomed and the festival is designed as an international event. The official website provides information in both Japanese and English, and many staff and volunteers speak English. Conference sessions in Trans Asia Music Meeting are often conducted in English or with translation. TicketMe platform supports English payment. For showcase venues, music transcends language, and many artists perform in English. The festival's diverse lineup includes artists from over a dozen countries, making it one of Japan's most internationally friendly showcase festivals.

How can artists apply to perform at Music Lane Festival Okinawa?

Artists can apply through the official Artist Open Call which begins in early summer via the festival website in cooperation with TuneCore Japan. Applicants need a TuneCore Japan account to submit their music, profile, and live performance video. Selection is made by a jury of industry professionals including festival directors and media from across Asia. Both Japan-based and overseas artists are eligible, and selected artists receive showcase slots, conference access, and networking opportunities. There is no application fee, but selected artists are responsible for their own travel and accommodation unless supported by export offices.
