What to expect

The Kagoshima Marathon is a full marathon that lets you race and feel everything about Kagoshima, from downtown energy to volcanic coastline. Covering a full 42.195 kilometers, this marathon courses through Kagoshima City’s energetic streets before leading participants alongside the coastal embrace of Kinko Bay and into the backdrop of Sakurajima, an active volcanic island that keeps a steady pulse of unpredictability. The route’s elevation change is moderate but steady, averaging around 150 meters of gain, demanding both endurance and focus while remaining accessible for first-time marathoners thanks to a generous time limit.

Expect a course that showcases famous places in Kagoshima such as Tenmonkan Street, the statue of Saigo Takamori, and Sengan-en Garden, which the course passes at 38.9 km. You can also see Sakurajima and Kinko Bay for many kilometers. The first 13 km loop through the downtown grid, giving you city atmosphere and crowd support, and only from about the 13 km mark does the course follow the coastline, offering stunning views of tranquil Kinko Bay and the majestic Sakurajima volcano. The atmosphere is enhanced by Kagoshima-style enthusiastic cheering, with local groups performing traditional music and dance.

The event includes both a full marathon and a fun run, with free admission for spectators. Runners receive pork miso soup and rice balls after finishing, a local hospitality tradition. The Japanese title of this edition bills it as a countdown commemoration of Saigo Takamori’s 200th birth anniversary and the 150th year since his death, adding cultural depth to your race experience.

FAQ

Is Kagoshima Marathon suitable for first-time marathon runners?

Yes, the full marathon has a seven-hour time limit with cutoff points that are spaced to allow steady progress, making it welcoming for beginners. The course is rolling with moderate elevation gain averaging 150 meters, but first 13 km through downtown grid is flat and helps establish rhythm. Aid stations provide water, sports drink, and local nutrition such as sweet potato and pork soup. Pacers are provided, baggage transport from Dolphin Port to City Hall is included, and the finish festival offers supportive atmosphere.

How do start and finish work since they are different places?

The start is at former Dolphin Port site on waterfront and finish is in front of Kagoshima City Hall, so start and finish are different places. Organizers provide baggage transport from start to finish, so your bag will be waiting at City Hall. Free shuttle buses run from Kagoshima-Chuo Station to both venues and back after race. Staying near Tenmonkan or Kagoshima-Chuo Station makes logistics easy, and the 5 AM direct shuttle from Kagoshima-Chuo Station is recommended if you stay far.

What is special about the course scenery?

The course begins at Dolphin Port heading south along seaside, passes Tenmonkan Street, Saigo Takamori statue, and Sengan-en Garden at 38.9 km, offering stunning views of Kinko Bay and Sakurajima. From about 13 km mark, the route follows coastline with tranquil bay and majestic volcano as borrowed scenery. The turnaround at Shigetomi in Aira City allows you to see both urban and coastal landscapes. This combination of history, volcano, and ocean makes Kagoshima one of the most scenic marathons in Japan.

Can international runners enter easily?

Yes, international runners can enter via RUNJAPAN portal at https://runjapan.jp which provides English guidance and same entry fee of 11,000 yen through portal. The official site https://www.kagoshima-marathon.jp has English information, and inquiry desk responds to English questions. Bib pickup is available at Ibusuki Municipal Gymnasium previous day and at start area race morning. The 5 AM direct shuttle from Kagoshima-Chuo Station and free shuttles help with early logistics, and English-speaking volunteers are present.

What should I bring and what food is provided?

Bring your bib with timing chip, identification for verification, and layers for cool coastal morning near Kinko Bay. A disposable warm-up layer is useful before start at Dolphin Port. Bring cash or IC card for food vendors at expo. Do not bring pets, bicycles, strollers, or drones, as roads are closed and volcanic area has restrictions. On course, aid stations provide water and local snacks, and at finish pork miso soup and rice balls are provided, a tradition praised in past race reports.
