rockin’on sonic 2027 is a two-day indoor music festival taking place in Tokyo on 9–10 January 2027. Produced by Rockin’on Japan and CreativeMan Production, the festival focuses entirely on international music and brings together established alternative-rock acts, influential musicians and newer artists for a concentrated weekend of live performances.
The third edition marks an important change for the festival. After its first two editions were held at Makuhari Messe on a much larger scale, rockin’on sonic will move to SGC HALL ARIAKE in Tokyo’s Ariake district for 2027. The venue has a standing capacity of more than 5,000 and is designed specifically for high-quality live music, giving the festival a smaller and more intimate setting.
The complete 2027 lineup has already been announced, with four artists performing each day. Saturday features Bloc Party, Dinosaur Jr., Kim Gordon and Violet Grohl, while Sunday brings Suede, Pale Waves, Kula Shaker and Dove Ellis.
Do you know? Planning events, festivals, concerts, and cultural experiences in Japan can be overwhelming. Japan Travelo brings everything together in one place, helping you manage your itinerary, transport, and accommodation with ease—so you can enjoy Japan without the stress of planning.
rockin’on sonic is designed around a simple musical idea: bringing respected international artists with long careers together with younger or emerging acts that have strong credibility among dedicated music fans. The organisers describe the festival as a gathering built around established artists trusted by longtime Western-music fans alongside newer artists attracting younger audiences.
The 2027 edition takes that concept into a considerably smaller venue. Instead of the approximately 20,000-person scale used for the first two editions, the organisers have chosen a roughly 5,000-person venue so that the festival can continue while preserving its music-focused identity. This means audiences should experience the performances in a much more concentrated environment.
The venue itself is another major attraction. SGC HALL ARIAKE features a permanent immersive audio system developed by d&b, described by the venue as the world’s first permanent immersive-audio installation in a concert hall. The hall also supports both standing and seated configurations, allowing the festival to offer different ways of experiencing the performances.
The Saturday, 9 January lineup brings together four generations and styles of alternative and independent rock. Bloc Party leads the day, known for combining post-punk energy with dance-oriented rhythms and for the international impact of their breakthrough album Silent Alarm. Dinosaur Jr. adds their distinctive loud, guitar-driven alternative rock sound, while Kim Gordon represents one of the most influential figures to emerge from New York’s experimental and alternative-rock scene. Violet Grohl completes the day with a newer generation of rock.
The Sunday, 10 January lineup shifts toward British alternative and psychedelic rock. Suede, one of the defining bands of the Britpop era, headlines a bill that also includes Pale Waves, Kula Shaker and Dove Ellis. Kula Shaker brings decades of psychedelic-rock history, while Pale Waves and Dove Ellis represent more contemporary approaches to guitar-based music.
Unlike some large multi-stage festivals, the 2027 edition is built around just eight announced artists across two days. This makes the lineup relatively easy to follow for visitors who want to concentrate on complete performances rather than choosing between many simultaneous stages.
The 2027 festival is expected to feel different from the first two editions because of its new venue and reduced capacity. SGC HALL ARIAKE provides a combination of a large standing floor and upper-level seating, creating a more compact concert environment than the exhibition-hall setting previously used at Makuhari Messe.
Standing-ticket holders can use the first-floor standing area as well as the fourth-floor unreserved seating area, although the organisers warn that the unreserved seats may fill up. Reserved-seating ticket holders instead have designated seats on the second and third floors.
Because the festival takes place indoors in January, weather is much less of a concern than it would be at an outdoor music festival. Visitors can also combine the concerts with sightseeing, shopping and dining in Tokyo before or after the performances.

The 2027 festival will take place at SGC HALL ARIAKE, part of Tokyo Dream Park in Ariake, Koto City, Tokyo.
The venue is located at 3-3-8 Ariake, Koto City, Tokyo and offers a maximum capacity of 3,767 seats in a seated configuration and more than 5,000 people when the standing configuration is used. Its first floor can accommodate a large standing audience, while the upper floors provide seated areas and balconies.
SGC HALL ARIAKE is particularly suitable for rockin’on sonic because it was designed with live music in mind. Its permanent immersive-audio system and flexible live-floor configuration are intended to create a strong sound experience for both standing and seated audiences.
rockin’on sonic was launched as a new New Year music festival focusing on international music. The first edition took place in January 2025 and established the festival’s concept of combining internationally respected artists with newer acts. The event was created through a collaboration involving Rockin’on and CreativeMan Production.
The second edition followed in January 2026 at Makuhari Messe. That edition was reduced to a single day because of venue scheduling constraints, while retaining the festival’s focus on established international artists and newer acts. Its lineup included artists such as Pet Shop Boys, Underworld, Travis, Wolf Alice, KNEECAP, Blossoms and others.
The 2027 edition is therefore the festival’s third edition and represents a major change in format. The organisers have openly explained that the previous large-scale model attracted fewer visitors than the approximately 20,000-per-day capacity they had planned for, resulting in significant losses. For 2027 they have chosen a smaller venue and lower capacity in order to continue the festival while protecting its musical concept.
SGC HALL ARIAKE is well connected to Tokyo’s rail network. The closest major access points include Tokyo Big Sight Station on the Yurikamome Line and Kokusai-Tenjijo Station on the Rinkai Line.
According to the venue, Tokyo Big Sight Station is approximately a five-minute walk away, while Kokusai-Tenjijo Station is around nine minutes on foot. Tokyo Teleport Station is another available Rinkai Line option.
For international visitors, Tokyo’s extensive rail network makes public transportation the easiest way to reach the venue. Visitors staying in areas such as Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ginza, Tokyo Station or Ueno can connect through the city’s rail and subway system before continuing toward Ariake.
Driving is generally less convenient for a major Tokyo concert. Public transportation is recommended, particularly because thousands of visitors may be arriving around the same time.
Ariake and the wider Tokyo Bay area have several hotels suitable for visitors attending the festival. Staying around Ariake, Odaiba or Toyosu can reduce the journey to the venue, while areas such as Ginza, Tokyo Station and Shimbashi provide a larger choice of hotels and restaurants while remaining relatively convenient by train.
Visitors who want more nightlife and entertainment may prefer Shibuya or Shinjuku. These districts require a longer journey to Ariake but provide much greater choice for restaurants, bars, shopping and late-night activities.
For an international visitor attending both festival days, staying somewhere with straightforward rail access is generally more important than choosing a hotel immediately beside the venue.
The Ariake and Tokyo Bay area has plenty to combine with a concert visit. Tokyo Big Sight, Odaiba, Toyosu and the waterfront are all nearby, while the wider Tokyo area provides virtually unlimited sightseeing options.
Visitors can also use the festival as part of a longer Tokyo trip. Historic Asakusa, the shopping districts of Ginza and Shibuya, Shinjuku’s entertainment areas and attractions around Tokyo Station can all be reached by public transportation.
January is also a good time to explore Tokyo’s winter atmosphere. Visitors staying through the weekend can plan one festival day around the concert and use the other parts of the day for sightseeing, shopping or dining.
Ariake, Odaiba and Toyosu have restaurants and cafés suitable for a meal before the concert. Larger shopping and entertainment complexes in the surrounding waterfront districts provide additional choices, while Tokyo’s central districts offer a much wider range of Japanese and international cuisine.
Visitors attending the 13:00 start should consider eating before arriving or planning a meal after the main performances. For those staying in central Tokyo, areas such as Ginza, Shimbashi, Shibuya and Shinjuku provide particularly extensive evening dining options.
Tokyo is also an excellent destination for exploring Japanese food beyond the festival area. Sushi, ramen, yakitori, tempura, soba and modern Japanese cuisine are all easy to find throughout the city.
The official 2027 ticket prices are currently:

Mixed 2-day ticket

9 January reserved seating + 10 January standing: ¥40,500
The standing ticket provides access to the first-floor standing area and fourth-floor unreserved seating. Reserved seating provides access to designated seats on the second and third floors but does not include access to the first-floor standing area or fourth-floor unreserved seating.
The official website has already opened advance sales, while the general sale is scheduled for 10 October 2026 at 10:00 according to the current event information. Visitors should purchase through authorised ticket channels because the organisers specifically warn against unofficial resale platforms.
January in Tokyo can be cold, particularly in the morning and evening, so visitors should bring a warm outer layer even though the festival itself is indoors.
If you want to stand close to the stage, a standing ticket is the more appropriate choice. Visitors who prefer a guaranteed place to sit throughout the day should consider reserved seating instead.
The festival does not permit professional cameras, recording equipment, action cameras or live streaming. Glass bottles, cans, chairs, mats, selfie sticks and several other items are also prohibited. Plastic bottles are permitted, subject to the venue’s rules.
Children under six are not permitted to enter, while visitors aged six and above require their own ticket. Accessible seating is available through the standing-ticket category, with visitors asked to submit an accessibility-area application after purchasing their ticket.
Because the festival lasts for several hours, comfortable footwear, hydration and planning for breaks are worthwhile, especially for visitors choosing the standing area.
