Located only a few minutes by train from Hiroshima station, a trip to Yokogawa is a fun place to visit, especially during its annual Fushigi-Ichi festival when the elderly, kids, anime heroes and large fruit mascots rub shoulders along the main street. Yokogawa’s main areas are closed to traffic on this day and stores open stalls along the side of the road selling their wares or festival foods to enjoy.
The Yokogawa area, which has a nice mix of retro Showa-era shops, small eateries, arty galleries and stores, has a very interesting and relaxed, low key atmosphere. There were a lot of people wandering around the area enjoying various performances including children’s kagura, some maids singing about Hiroshima okonomiyaki and the yosakoi dance while others were bargain hunting, poking around the flea market stalls.

The Wonder Carnival is the Cosplay part of the festival. Yokogawa Festival, known as Yokogawa Fushigi Ichi or Fushigi-ichi Festival, represents unique blend of retro shopping street culture and modern Japanese pop culture.
Fushigi-Ichi – Mysterious Market: Fushigi means mysterious or wonder, Ichi means market. The festival started as community revitalization event for Yokogawa Shotengai shopping arcade, an old, charming Hiroshima suburb with Showa-era retro atmosphere. Local shop owners wanted to bring life back to aging shotengai by creating festival where elderly, kids, anime heroes and large fruit mascots rub shoulders.
Two-Part Festival: On third weekend, main street and alleys are in full swing for two part festival. First part starts on Saturday morning and celebrates children and their cartoon heroes. Different characters roam streets, some from famous commercials. Second part, probably most popular, takes place on Sunday and is called Wonder Carnival. It got name because street is packed with decked out cosplay enthusiasts. Heroes of Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon or Naruto will become your travel companions for day.
Cosplay Culture in Japan: Cosplay, term combining costume and play, emerged from Japanese anime, manga, and game fandom. Hiroshima’s event, also called Cosquerade in Hiroshima or Pop Culture Hiroshima, is part of national network of cosplay events leading to World Cosplay Summit. Performers spend countless hours preparing perfect look, with meticulously handmade costumes.
Yokogawa Identity: Yokogawa is known for retro Showa-era shops, small eateries, arty galleries, God Burger one of longest running eateries, and historical Hiroshima streetcar trams parked in front. Festival preserves low-key, down to earth and comfortable atmosphere while embracing pop culture.
Community Inclusion: Special to see how town changes during festival, as festival goers fill streets and browse stores that are normally very quiet. It is quite spectacle to see mix of local old ladies who seem to make up 90 percent of residents, Hapi-coat wearing festival staff, huge mascot tomato and other characters as well as cosplay performers in outrageous get-ups all share same street for day.
The festival follows shopping street festival customs with modern cosplay etiquette.
Pedestrianized Shotengai: Main areas are closed to traffic on this day and stores open stalls along side of road selling wares or festival foods. Shops grilling meats outside, others slinging out bowls of noodles and big glasses of draught beer, while high calibre bars serving selection of wonderful wines. Many small shops also open for business as usual and there were open areas set up in car-parks for flea market stalls.
Wonder Carnival Cosplay Etiquette: The Wonder Carnival is cosplay part. Performers are happy to pose for photographs if you ask first. You have to arrive early before models tire of paparazzi. Important custom: ask permission, give them time to strike right pose, as preparation of hair and props before ready is significant aspect of being cosplay performer. Do not touch costumes without permission.
Children’s Kagura and Yosakoi: Throughout festival, various performances including children’s kagura Shinto dance, maids singing about Hiroshima okonomiyaki, and yosakoi energetic dance, reflecting local festival traditions.
Mascot Characters: Large fruit mascots and characters from famous commercials roam streets alongside cosplayers, especially on first day celebrating children and cartoon heroes.
Flea Market Bargain Hunting: Open areas set up in car-parks for flea market stalls where bargain hunting is tradition, poking around stalls for second-hand kimono, toys, and retro goods.
Cosplay Posing Ritual: Some costumes are amazing and meticulously handmade. Group costumes similarly impressive. Final pose is quite sight after preparation. Cosplayers often perform short skits or character poses from anime.
